BrandGuard proudly participated in a groundbreaking exhibition held at Uganda’s Parliament, focusing on the fight against counterfeit goods. This event, an integral part of the public consultations on the Anti-Counterfeit Goods Bill, brought together key stakeholders, including policymakers, businesses, and advocacy groups, to address the growing challenge of counterfeiting.
The proposed Anti-Counterfeit Goods Bill seeks to combat the production and trade of counterfeit products that infringe on intellectual property rights, specifically targeting copyrights and trademarks. If enacted, the Bill will introduce more stringent penalties for offenders, including up to 10 years in prison—significantly higher than the current two-year maximum sentence or the sh2 million fine.
Empowering Regulatory Bodies to Act
The Bill also aims to empower enforcement agencies like the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) and the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) by granting them authority to confiscate counterfeit goods. These measures are designed to curb the proliferation of fake products in Uganda’s markets and protect legitimate businesses, innovators, and consumers.
Championing Public Consultation
The exhibition was a continuation of the public consultation efforts led by Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa and other lawmakers supporting the Bill. Earlier this year, in collaboration with the Anti-Counterfeit Network (ACN), these leaders emphasized the importance of inclusive dialogue. Public consultations have been instrumental in gathering insights from diverse stakeholders, ensuring the legislation is both comprehensive and effective in addressing the counterfeit problem.
Cultural Tourism and Economic Impact
Counterfeiting not only undermines intellectual property rights but also jeopardizes Uganda’s cultural tourism and heritage industries. Protecting these sectors from counterfeit exploitation is critical to preserving the country’s unique identity and fostering sustainable economic growth.
BrandGuard’s participation in this exhibition underscores its commitment to raising awareness about counterfeiting and advocating for robust legal frameworks to eliminate this challenge. Together with other stakeholders, we are optimistic that this Bill will create a safer, fairer market for all Ugandans.
